Snakeoil Firmware - 1.2.0 (Gear Isolation)
#1
Introduction
Been a long time coming, but here it is. Snakeoil Gear Isolation!

Use this firmware to upgrade to Snakeoil Gear Isolation if you don't want to re-install your base OS to the latest Ubuntu Server. This will mostly work, but you may not be able to install some of the advanced players like HQplayer, JRiver, and so on.

32 bit AMD/Intel support (i386) is now officially dropped with Gear Isolation. Nothing much I can do here because upstream is no longer offering i386 builds. Raspberry Pi however, is still on 32 bits, and I'm thinking of adding ARM 64 bit support if there is enough demand for it.

Hi there,

I installed this latest version and I'm not sure if this is linked to your comment in the original post:

This will mostly work, but you may not be able to install some of the advanced players like HQplayer, JRiver, and so on.

but I have an issue now where Snakeoil doesn't see Jriver at all. When I use VNC viewer I can see that Jriver is running, I just can't manipulate it from Snakeoil at all.

Also, it seems a lot flakier in that the OS will often look like it's trying to load and never quite get there, although Jriver seems to work fine. Do you think this is something I've done wrong?

Which version of JRiver are you using? If you can run JRiver then it's not JRiver 28.

I said "mostly wor"k because newer HQPlayer and JRiver packages may no longer work on Ubuntu 16.04 or 18.04. Hence the move to 20.04

I am also very interested what JRiver version you used, I have tried with JRiver 27.0.84, but it will not start in SnakeOil 1.2.0 or 1.2.1 (I get "mediacenter27[2874]: segfault at 10 ip 00007f2eb0c77610 sp 00007ffc290e43f0 error 4 in libJRTools.so[7f2eb0a4e000+387000]" in the log).
Please share the exact JRiver version you used and if you did something else, e.g. install some extra packages.

I have helped a member here got JRiver 28 up and running successfully. JRiver 27 and 28 have made some changes which makes it difficult to work in a virtual environment.

So the new module I have will not only add the hooks to enable JRiver 28, but allow JRiver to run properly in a virtual environment.

The solution is to use a different VNC viewer. Apologies as I havn't create a thread on JRiver yet.. I'm on a mission to finish some thing at work at the moment, and this is probably going to take up most of my time for the week. But I will try and upload the module later tonight. Hopefully the change will make it work with JRiver 27 too.

No worries, write the JRiver guide when you have the time, I use the SnakeOil 1.1.11 with JRiver 25 in the meantime.

Hi there, I'm using JRMC v.24.0.69.

Also, when I load JRMC, I cannot see my DAC at all, when I was using my previous Snakoil install (earlier that same day) I had no issues whatsoever.

The only thing that changed is me upgrading to the latest version. I would have happily rolled back to this older (working) version, but I have another new issue - my PC's BIOS will not reset and I'd disabled the video output, so now I'm stuck with the snakeoil that doesn't work and no ability to roll back. I've even removed the BIOS battery for several days and unplugged the PSU from the wall.

All good fun.

I have made some form of progress;

1. I added an ALSA output device in SO
2. Tried to use LMS (instead of JRMC)

and I have sound - this is a win of sorts, but even more frustrating as I would much rather use JRMC (and it's frankly much friendlier Jremote app that I purchased for my phone).

Any ideas on how I can set up an ALSA output device that JRMC can see?

And add JRMC back to the list of installable / controllable players in SO?

Any help massively appreciated here.
