I just discovered this:

I'm wondering if it would need patched into the distro to take full advantage of the CPU features?

These ain't necessary. Turbo boost is higher level than that.

Right now Snakeoil don't have fixes for meltdown and spectre. Not entirely sure how to incorprate these yet, the risks however are relatively small, as these two vulnerabilities are more targetted for a virtualisation environment.

Dumbing down speculative branching may have positive sonique benefits however (I'm just guessing here) so yes this will be looked into in the future. If I'm not wrong, all it takes is a simple "sudo dist-upgrade" and you'd pull down  the latest microcodes.
