No.. They're disabled, as we find having these features disabled gives better sound.

On the downside, this means you can't really run Snakeoil OS on a laptop on battery for long as everything is running full steam - Even the CPU is not throttled to save power (FreqStep).

I can always create a kernel to allow for this though, you will also need to enable ACPI in the BIOS... Folks, put your comments here if you want this feature so I can gauge interest.

Ic. Thanks a lot, Agent Kith.  I think, for the NAS version, that will be great if SnakeOil don't mind to enable EIST and let the HD to sleep.

In fact, so far even my new cheap fanless PC (which installed with NAS version Snakeoil OS) scores 5-6 digits in cyclictest (very bad, right?), the sound is so much in comparing with my traditional Synology 216+ with 2 traditional WD Red label HDs.  The most significant difference is the sound is much 3D and a lot of improvement in treble, much stronger dynamic, secondly is the stage is much wider and deeper, the density is more solid, so much more live feeling, and then thirdly is details.

As up to this moment the outcome is very promising, besides I'd invest for better CL value ram (now I'm using CL17 and the best I can find is CL14), I wish Snakeoil can help a bit more when you have more time.  Thanks a lot for your great Snakkeoil OS, Agent Kith!  Big Grin

Cyclictest wise it all depends I think.. For sure absolutely lowest isn't necessary better, as long as you get that music sound right - it's far more important.

E.g. that 3D sound stage is one of the most important aspects (and how wide/deep the sound stage is).. If you get that done right, and your ears are used to it - you'll instantly know if both speakers are out of phase, one of them has an inverted phase relative to the other, or left and right are swapped..

How hard it punches, and how naturally that punch falls off (harmonics)...

These things are far more important than latency (what cyclictest measures).

HongKong is still a great place to shop for computers... Where I am (Perth Western Australia), they don't really carry a lot of stuffs. I had to order things from overseas, which takes 2-3 months to get here, and if they don't work and I have to order different parts - it'll be another 2-3 months... Six months in and I still don't the things I need for my second build... Sad

Hi, Agent Kith,

Thank you for your advise.  I guess you live in a very remote place.

Look, now I'm already very happy with the improvement caused by this new fanless file server.  Of course, I still keep an eye on Snakeoil for any update.  Please get more rest and take care.   Big Grin
