I have to say though, I did a very quick listen in on some classical between hpet and tsc, my non-tuned ears couldn't hear a difference haha

Good good good.

In my system, roughly speaking, for the timbre and sound stage, hpet vs tsc is a bit like the silver interconnect wire vs copper interconnect wire.

For the overall presentation, when playing band music or orchestral music, tsc is like a drunken band or an orchestra without conductor.  The mood may be better but the beat, the punch and the structure are like an amateur band.

I've compared hpet and tsc in several scenarios, e.g. using SO as a player (MPD to me), or as a file server for another SO, or Lumin and some other streamers.  The results are consistent.  It's quite a surprise to me that TSC affects even that PC is only using as a NFS file server.

Besides, I've also compared them in a ubuntu desktop pc I used it to watch netflix, youtube and files on TV, and connecting to my 2 channels.  Not only the audio quality tells the difference, and it's interesting that the difference in video quality is also significant.  So to the ordinary kernel vs lowlatency kernel.  Yet this pc is not running with LTS ubuntu, no official RT kernel is available.

Thanks for the comparison thoughts, will do some more testing on the weekend and report back

Hello .... I've upgraded to 1.3 ... it looks to be working fine,  but for some reason I've lost the local squeezelite player it will not start... I get this in the log:

**** 2024-01-17T01:09:56
**** Squeezelite (ralph)

Start Player: cd /var/www;_NAME="Basement Stereo" _OUTPUT="hw:0,1" _FORMAT="pcm" _OPTIONS="" _MIPV4="24:4f:4f:24:08:8c" /var/www/players/Squeezelite-ralph/init /var/www/players/Squeezelite-ralph 2>&1;/var/www/players/Squeezelite-ralph/start /var/www/players/Squeezelite-ralph 2>&1;

I started with 1.8 .... and installed ralph   ....   I've stopped and restarted it a few times and REST,  finally shows that its running,   but I don't see it on LMS or in top

-----    I take that back it shows not running .......   so ok,  When I try to run squeezelite from the cmd line i get:

/var/www/players/Squeezelite-v1.8$  ./squeezelite -n basement -o hw:0,1

squeezelite: dl-call-libc-early-init.c:37: _dl_call_libc_early_init: Assertion `sym != NULL' failed.
Aborted (core dumped)

I swear ,  the only thing i did was run the fw update script ---

also,  this is on ubuntu 20.04 ... that has been running and updating snake oil for a couple years.

thanks for the help

Tim

Yes, several have reported similar.
AK appears to be offline currently...maybe a well deserved holiday :-)  but I fear the bushfires in Perth may have impacted his life as nothing from him since they were reported. :-(

Hoping you and yours  are safe and well AK.

Best,
bob

OK .... so further analysis on this problem til Agent Kieth gets back on line (prayers AK)   I've now got Snake Oil 1.30 running on my main music server box with Ubuntu 20.04 ...  and my backup server running Ubuntu 22.04 .   I've even gone so far as to switch hard drives between the boxes and repeat all my testing  (exact same hardware but just to be sure it wasn't an issue on my end with one of the bios)

Here is what I get:

Ubuntu 20.04

It shows squeezlite installed but it doesn't run at all.  It spits out a log that just gives me:
**** 2024-01-17T18:32:46
**** Squeezelite (ralph)

Start Player: cd /var/www;_NAME="Basement Stereo" _OUTPUT="hw:0,1" _FORMAT="pcm" _OPTIONS="" _MIPV4="24:4f:4f:24:08:8c" /var/www/players/Squeezelite-ralph/init /var/www/players/Squeezelite-ralph 2>&1;/var/www/players/Squeezelite-ralph/start /var/www/players/Squeezelite-ralph 2>&1;

LMS is working beautifully on the other players  in my house i one of which is an on older version of Snake Oil Server.   which is working flawlessly throughout ... an is my main listening spot

Ubuntu 22.04

A little difference here.  It shows squeeze-lite running,  but is not actually giving me any sound.  I have tested this on the spidf outputs and the analog outputs and get nothing.  and again this server can play to the other players in the house

Both machines behaved the same in all of the configurations I tested them with,   no sound from on board analog or digital.  The only thing I didn't do was test USB.

I noticed in both situations when I restarted REST the alsa mixer system volume would be set to zero.  When I found this,  I thought for sure it would work,  but once adjusted back to 100% still no sound.

This is a real bummer,  but I will survive...  AK please take care of you and yours before dealing with this BS.  .......   If anyone wants to jump in here, any Ideas?
