Philosophy Behind Snakeoil
The philosophy of how to use Snakeoil is summarised by this slogan:
"Follow The Music, Follow Snakeoil".
The predecessor of Snakeoil started out as the current working operating system I was using for digital playback. We noticed several drawbacks of that old approach after using the predecessor for several months.
The biggest issues were:
- No quick and easy way to distribute the OS and fix problems
- Changing any settings require the user to log in remotely to the server, and run various scripts and commands
- New ideas can't be pushed down easily and quickly
Crux of the issue is the Linux operating system is still foreign to most people. While people like the sound quality of the predecessor it is unfit for use. Audiophiles should focus only on the audio aspect (i.e. follow the music). Learning how to use the operating system, while interesting, does not necessary bring anything to the table.
Snakeoil is my first attempt to address these flaws. The web pages are designed to make it easier for you to make changes specific to audio, and the Live CD gives you the oppturnity to try Linux in a "non-destructive" way. And you have the option of installing the Live CD onto your SSD/HDD should you decide to use it.
The goals of Snakeoil is to give you flexibility in your choies. Ultimately I have NFI what is good sounding, all I can do is offer suggestions, and I present them to you as options on Snakeoil.
You as the audiophile have to make your own decision and apply different firmware and select a player that works best for you. And you do this all a web browser and a few simple clicks (no need to remember script names!).
By working collobrative together, hopefully we can end up with a Linux distro that is not only easy to use, but sounds acceptable to exceptional to the individual you.
